Under the scheme, the underground project it is not simple a water basin. Authors have transformed idea into an image of a new city. The underground community is formed round channels which provide water delivery, transportation and an agricultural irrigation. The cellular form creates new typology of areas where new distribution of activity is formed.

Splits
Many hardwood floors develop small splits or cracks in the surface of the wood over the years. This is due to the fact that wood can dry out with central heating and air conditioning. One way of repairing these is to use some angled nails to secure the two pieces together, along with some wood putty to hide the blemishes. If, however, your floor is suffering from large splits you might want to think about refinishing the floor, one good thing about wood floors is that they can be re-sanded and re-finished over the years so that blemishes like this can be dealt with fairly easily..

Gaps
Another common hardwood floor problem is that gaps can develop between planks. This is another problem that relates to the nature of the material. Wood is a natural substrate and therefore often shrinks as it dries and expands if it gets wet. Therefore most of the gaps that you will find in your wooden floor will be seasonal therefore perhaps if you can bear it the best plan is to be patient. The natural process of wood will change through time. However if the gaps are there all year round you may have to call on a professional to sort things out for you.

Buckling
Buckling in a wooden floor is a major problem and one that you can’t deal with yourself or just want until the seasonality of the wood makes things right. A buckled floor occurs when the boards warp and lift up from the subfloor that they are attached to. You will have to identify the cause of the bucking and sort that out first before you reattach the floor to the subfloor once more.

Scratches
It is ever so easy to scratch a wooden floor but it is essential that you deal with scratches as they happen. Your wooden floor could just have a small scratch that can be easily dealt with but if it is a deep scratch it may need a bit of extra tlc. Small scratches are fairly common and extremely easy to fix. You can conceal the area with a similar coloured crayon to the wood of the floor. However, if the scratches are much larger and appear to be gouges, more work will be needed. Firstly you will need to sand down the finish from the area that has been scratched, then you need to fill the gouge with wood filler. Once this is dry you can sand down the area once more and finish it off with a sealant to ensure it is as good as new.

Water Stains
Water is the big bad when it comes to wooden floors. You use a coaster on your wooden tables because otherwise they get stained – it is the same with a wooden floor. If it should get stained it is important to dry the area as soon as possible. If it is stained it is a case of having to sand down he area and re-finish the floor so try to avoid the work in the first place and not to spill anything!

Burns
Like water the other big bad for woood floors is burns. Seems obvious doesn’t it but burns can happen on wooden floors for many reasons. Cigarettes, hot oil, or dropping a hot pan onto the floor things like this are easily done. If this should happen, evaluate the situation. Minor burns can be dealt with like water stains however if it is a bad burn you will have to deal with it like you would a deep scratch. So the moral is to be careful at all times.

Wood floors may need more maintenance than linoleum or tile floors, but they make up for it in beauty. Be sure you get your money's worth out of your floors by knowing how to immediately fix any problem by yourself at home. A couple of people have contacted us about the TV cabinet/desk in Carrie and Big's apartment so we thought we'd tell you where you can get it.  It is designed by Thomas O'Brien for Hickory Chair and it's called the Hailings Secretary.

Carrie's Bed in Sex in The City II

Did you see Sex In the City II this past weekend? We thought it wasn't as bad as the reviews said it was... Seriously, don't you think the critics take this movie a bit too literally?  After all, the movie is all about the clothes and the fantasies...

Anyway, did you like the bed in Carrie's and Big's apartment? We do. And we know exactly where to get it too.

The bed is made by Vanguard Furniture and you can see it here (it is shown as tufted but it's an optional feature.  You can get it untufted plain as shown in the movie.  The nail heads can be changed to polished nickel  as well).

The fabric, which is what made the bed, is by Kravet Couture and it's called Velvet Gate, pattern number 29868.  Shown in the movie in black/white, it is also available in other colorways. The fabric is a linen/velvet combination. Very, very pretty in person.  You'd love it.

The fabric is priced at $149/yard but you can get it for $104/yard at the Kravet fabric section on our site. Enter the pattern number "29868" (the quotation marks is recommended for precise search) and you can see all the colorways available.

The really important stuff!

I am finalizing all of the details of my trip to Arizona to meet NieNie and her family. All of my work material is organized and packed, passport tucked away safely and US dollars organized by presidents in my wallet. (You really need to colour coordinate your money like we do...it's so confusing! ;-)

I can always hear my mother's voice in my head, "Now Linda, be sure you aren't handing over a ten instead of a one!!" I can always count on her for sound advice

On my recent trip to Bangor, I picked up some pretty clothes. Lots of ruffles, soft colours and even a fun pair of gladiator sandals that don't make me look like I'm clinging to my youth too much, I hope.

Dumb...dumb!

I bought it to go with this dress:

Now, I know what you are thinking: I will look like a mad fool in this dress. But remember, I am 5 ft 4" and am wearing the above sweater (which really does match) with it. So it is not too short and is actually very pretty together; I know this for certain because my mother told me so!!

I also bought this pretty top, which looks great with my white pants and the silver, ruffled flip flops below:

And these sandals in cream. They are very comfortable and not high enough that I feel like Kate Gosselin, either. Because I am NOT a fan of her shoes!

I also bought a very pretty sundress and light sweater at The Gap, kind of nautical, but not so much that it screams Farewell to Nova Scotia. Because, you know I try to be a good ambassador to Canada when I travel. No embarrassing everyone!

Gorgeous Beach Shell Chandelier from Currey

We're crazy about this new beach shell chandelier from Currey & Co. Isn't it marvelous? Can you see this with a white linen couch and white-washed floor? You'll need a very high ceiling though. This chandelier is huge!

The size is 37rd x 64h and the price is $5750 including shipping, a little expensive, perhaps, but oh it's so worth it.

Ultra Cool Barstool

We're digging this new barstool from Nuevo. Look at the base. Isn't it the coolest ever?

The barstool comes in black, brown and white leather. The base is made of solid stainless steel. It sells for $400/each.

Asphalt shingle coating

Asphalt shingle roof owners sometimes use the tinted acrylics from tin roofing repair.  There are  two reasons:

1.  Extend the life of the asphalt shingles.
2.  Reduce energy costs by changing dark colored shingles to a lighter color.
The roof to the left illustrates an energy savings project.
Rarely does a homeowner select a solid white tint because the appearance becomes dirty with tree droppings, etc.  But light grey, light tan and other lighter variations do help lower interior temperatures during warm days. We've worked so tirelessly to get the inside of our house feeling good and now all we want to do is go outside. 

Summer's here (ok, maybe not really, but it totally feels like it) and it's time to break out the sprinkler for the little guys to play in!!  I found this awesome vintage (I think) set of black iron outdoor patio furniture this week at Lucketts and I can't wait to bring it home in our truck today!!  It's really not at all like this one from High Society below (it has  much straighter lines)  but its' the first thing I thought of (and my husband too--  poor guy has an awesome memory & I've been filling his head with decorating!!) when I saw the set. 

It has kind of a modern retro-chic feeling that will work really well with the exterior of our {not-so-pretty}70s house.  Here's a photo of it when we first moved in last year. (below)  Enough good things haven't  been done to it yet to warrant an "after" picture.  (But we have moved the neon playset into a less conspicuous area until we can get the wooden one we're after, and the tree debris & drain pipe are gone.)

...The back and sides of our house are still beigey/ "nude" (I love to say that about our house...  it cracks me up) while the front is now a rich gray.  (Still??  Yes, still.)

...  I know the neighbors much just love us...  but hopefully they won't think we're as worthless as we look once we paint the sides & back of the house as SOON as Dave off of work for the summer.  (High school English teacher :)  I can't wait!!  (Both for summer vacation and a fully-painted house.)  

Anyway, the patio set is kind of a combination of these (in black iron) but doesn't have pillows that we can use:

I LOVE its size (a massive 3-seater sofa, a chair and a chaise!!) and it has awesome lines, but the paint is peeling off and of course we need to have cushions made.   I can't get the High Society cushions off of my mind but might  go with a solid fabric and do pillows.  (I wouldn't be going pink out there...  but possibly an enlarged "grandma" floral...  I'm also thinking about orange as I love it with the gray on the house...)

We've also got plans to work on the shed/ playhouse this weekend...

I set up a Facebook Page for Pure Style Home last night & posted a couple more pics of the shed as it is now.  I'm not quite sure how to really work facebook yet but hopefully I'll get the hang of it.  I'm thinking I will post little updates & progress on projects there.  Not as exciting as "voila" before & afters but I know some of you like to see behind-the-scenes & "progress" pictures.
